Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) is cancer that arises from the heart, also known as primary liver cancer or hepatoma. The liver is an organ composed of different cell types (eg, bile ducts, blood vessels, and fat cells). However, liver cells (hepatocytes) up 80% of liver tissue. Thus, the majority of primary liver cancer (more than 90% -95%) arises from liver cells and so-called liver cancer or carcinoma.

GLOBOCAN Based on data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), in 2008 recorded 748 000 cases of liver cancer are diagnosed. This disease is a cancer with the third highest mortality rate, with 696 000 patients die each year. More than 85% of cases occur in developing countries.


The cause of liver cancer as yet unknown. However, primary liver cancer, liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) tend to occur in the heart / liver damaged by birth defects, alcohol abuse, or chronic infection caused by diseases such as hepatitis B and C, hemochromatosis (too much iron content in the liver) and cirrhosis. More than 50% of people diagnosed with primary liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver has undergone. Those who suffer from a genetic condition called hemochromatosis have a greater risk.
